Top Takeout Meals for Summer

Ahhhh, summer. The season of picnics, sunbathing, swimming, camping, fishing, and exploring the great outdoors. With so many summer activities to choose from, who has time for cooking? Definitely not us, which is why we believe summer is the perfect season for ordering takeout. To celebrate the first day of our all-time favorite season, we’ve put together our list of the top takeout meals for summer.

BBQ

For many people, summer is synonymous with barbecues, but firing up the grill can sometimes feel like more trouble than it’s worth. Plus, it means standing in front of red-hot charcoal all day, which isn’t really how we want to be spending our Saturdays when it’s 90 degrees outside. Luckily, you can have your hot dogs and eat them too, with a takeout barbecue feast. Our go-to pick is always barbecue ribs, with at least three or four side dishes such as corn on the cob, baked beans, mashed potatoes, or macaroni and cheese. Just be prepared for the inevitable summer barbecue food coma.

Mexican Food

Tacos al Pastor

Even though it’s a hot dish, there’s something so summery about a sizzling plate of fajitas with all of the fixings. We just love takeout Mexican food in the summer, whether it’s a burrito, an order of tacos al pastor or a super cheesy quesadilla. Whatever you order as your main dish, don’t you dare skip the chips and salsa (or even better, guacamole with an extra spritz of lime). If your local Mexican restaurant doesn’t have margaritas on the takeout menu, we highly recommend whipping up a pitcher while you’re waiting for your order.

Pizza

There’s never a bad time for delivery pizza, and that includes warm summer afternoons. Our recommendation for hotter days is to go for a thin crust pizza and choose slightly lighter toppings such as fresh vegetables or (dare we say it) pineapple. For the perfect low-effort summer picnic, take your delivery pizza to a park along with a cooler of ice cold drinks, a couple of friends, and of course, a frisbee.

Thai Food

pad thai

Spicy curries aren’t at the top of our list in the summer, but fortunately most Thai takeout menus offer plenty of fresher options as well. As a starter, we recommend a refreshing order of summer rolls wrapped in rice paper or a zesty papaya salad. When it comes to mains, we always go for a milder noodle dish like Pad Thai, or if it’s extra hot outside, a big plate of cold rice noodles with peanut sauce and vegetables. Wash it all down with a refreshing Thai iced tea and you’ve got yourself the ultimate summer feast.

Sushi

One of the lighter takeout options, sushi is ideal for summer days when you don’t want to feel absolutely stuffed. Skip the miso soup and go for an order of chilled edamame, and then take your pick from your local sushi restaurant’s selection of rolls. If you’re ordering for just yourself, we recommend a rainbow roll so you can try a variety of fish in just one dish. If you’re feeding a crowd, most takeout sushi restaurants offer a combo platter of some kind, perfect for sharing.
